Welcome to our firm.

We understand that contacting an attorney about estate matters is rarely something you planned for. Most of our clients arrive at our door during one of life's most difficult chapters. We are here to make the legal portion of that chapter as clear and uncomplicated as possible.

What this page is for.

This is your private guide to working with Giro & Associates. It contains everything you need to know before, during, and after your first consultation with Mr. Giro. There is no rush — read what's relevant, skip what isn't, and return anytime.

You may share this link only with immediate family members or trusted advisors. The information here is specific to your matter.

A note on pace.

Probate and estate matters do not need to be resolved overnight. Most New Jersey estates are administered over six to twelve months. There is time for you to grieve, gather your thoughts, and make considered decisions.

If at any point this process feels overwhelming, please tell us. We can pause, slow down, or break the work into smaller steps.

Three things before Friday.

Before You Arrive Friday
Please bring a photo ID and the documents on the next tab — as many as you can locate. Don't worry about what is missing. We can work with what you have.

Documents to bring.

Gather what you can. Do not worry about completeness — we have helped families work through estates with very few records. Bring originals if available, copies if not.

Essential Documents
If you can only locate a few items, bring these first.
Death Certificate (Certified Copy)
A certified copy with raised seal. You may need several over time — please bring all you have.
Required
The Last Will and Testament
The original document if available. Look in a safe deposit box, home safe, filing cabinet, or with the attorney who prepared it.
Required
Any Trust Documents
Revocable trusts, irrevocable trusts, family trusts. Bring the original trust agreement and any amendments.
If applicable
Your Photo Identification
Driver's license or passport. We will make a copy for our file.
Required
Financial Records
Bring most recent statements where possible. We do not need years of history.
Bank & Investment Account Statements
Checking, savings, money market, brokerage, and retirement accounts. Most recent statement for each.
Helpful
Life Insurance Policies
Term, whole life, and any group life policies through an employer. Bring beneficiary designations if you have them.
Helpful
Recent Tax Returns
The previous two years of federal and New Jersey state returns. These help us understand the financial landscape quickly.
Helpful
Real Estate Documents
Property deeds for any homes or land owned. If you cannot locate, we can pull copies — they are public record.
Optional
Outstanding Debts & Bills
Mortgage statements, credit card bills, medical bills, and any unpaid invoices addressed to the decedent.
Optional
Personal Information
Information about beneficiaries and family.
List of Beneficiaries
Names, addresses, and dates of birth for anyone named in the will or trust. We will provide a worksheet if you do not have this prepared.
Helpful
Marriage & Divorce Records
If applicable to the decedent. Required for some New Jersey estate procedures.
If applicable

Cannot find something important?

That is more common than you think. Many wills are misplaced; account statements are lost; safe deposit boxes are sealed. Do not delay your consultation trying to find missing pieces.

Mr. Giro and our team have decades of experience helping families locate, recreate, or work around missing documents. We will solve it together.

The River Edge station on NJ Transit's Pascack Valley Line is a six-minute walk to our office. Trains from Hoboken Terminal run approximately every 30 minutes during business hours.

Bringing family.

If more than two will accompany you, please call ahead so we can prepare the larger conference room.

Mobility or accessibility needs?

Our office is fully ADA-accessible. The building has an elevator, and our suite has wide doorways. If you have specific accessibility requirements or would prefer a meeting at your home, please let us know in advance — Mr. Giro makes house calls for clients when circumstances require it.

11:30
Engagement & Next Steps
If you choose to retain our firm, Crystal will review the engagement letter and explain how communication will work going forward. You may take this home to review — there is no pressure to sign today.

No obligation.

Initial consultations are confidential and create no obligation on your part. If, after meeting Mr. Giro, you wish to consult other firms or take time to decide, that is entirely your prerogative.

We would only ever ask that you let us know your decision — so we can either prepare your file or close it with our records.

Fees & transparency.

There are no hidden costs. Below is a general overview of how our firm charges for probate work. Your specific engagement letter will provide exact figures based on your matter.

The initial consultation.

Complimentary. Your first meeting with Mr. Giro is free of charge, regardless of whether you retain our firm afterward.

This is our standard for matters involving recent loss. You should not have to pay simply to learn whether you need an attorney.

If you choose to retain us.

Probate and estate administration work in New Jersey is typically billed in one of three ways:

Out-of-pocket costs.

Separate from legal fees, certain costs are paid to third parties — court filing fees, certified copies, publication notices. These are reimbursed by the estate when funds become available. We do not mark them up.

Payment plans available.

We understand that legal fees can be a hardship — particularly when an estate is asset-rich but cash-poor. Mr. Giro can arrange for fees to be paid from the estate once probate is complete, or set up a monthly payment plan.

Please discuss any concerns about cost openly during your consultation. This is a topic we are comfortable with and want you to be too.

Common questions.

Most new clients arrive with similar concerns. Here are answers to questions we hear most often. If yours isn't listed, write it down and bring it Friday.

How long does probate take in New Jersey?
Most uncontested estates close within six to twelve months. Complex estates — those involving real estate sales, business interests, or family disputes — may extend longer. We will provide a more specific estimate after reviewing your matter.
Do I have to use the courts at all?
If your husband had a will, the will must be admitted to probate through the Bergen County Surrogate's Court. The process is administrative rather than adversarial — there is no "trial" unless the will is contested. We handle the entire filing on your behalf.
What if there is no will?
New Jersey has intestacy laws that determine who inherits if there is no will. As a surviving spouse, you have significant statutory rights — often the majority or entirety of the estate. We will explain exactly what applies to your situation.
Will I owe estate or inheritance taxes?
New Jersey repealed its estate tax in 2018, and most surviving spouses are fully exempt from federal estate tax. The New Jersey inheritance tax also generally exempts spouses. We will confirm the specifics during your consultation.
My husband had a business — what happens to it?
Business interests are among the most nuanced parts of an estate. Depending on the structure (sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC), continuation rights, buy-sell agreements, and tax consequences vary significantly. We have decades of experience advising small business families.
Can I access bank accounts and pay bills before probate is complete?
Joint accounts and accounts with named beneficiaries (POD/TOD) typically pass outside of probate and are accessible immediately. Solely-owned accounts will require Surrogate's Court letters — a process we expedite for our clients.
How often will we communicate?
You will receive written status updates at least every 30 days, more frequently when matters are active. Mr. Giro and Crystal are accessible by phone and email — most messages are returned within one business day.
Will Mr. Giro handle my case personally?
Mr. Giro is personally responsible for every estate matter in our firm. Crystal Lawson, our paralegal, supports document gathering and routine filings. Other attorneys on our team may assist with specialized issues but only under Mr. Giro's direct supervision.

A Note from JH Concierge

Maurice — this was built for you.

What you just scrolled is a sample digital client onboarding guide, built specifically for Giro & Associates using only publicly available information from girolaw.com.

The concept: every new client matter gets its own personalized welcome page. Names, dates, document checklists, FAQs — all customized to their specific situation. You send one link. Your clients arrive prepared, less anxious, and more confident in your firm.

For an elder law and estate planning practice, the impact would be substantial — fewer panicked phone calls before consultations, more complete document gathering, and clients who feel cared for from the first click.

Built as a friend, no pressure. If you'd like to talk over coffee in Bergen County, I'd be glad to. If not, take whatever ideas resonate.
